Writer Amanda Morin Shares her Inspirations for ‘Emotional Vocabulary’ Article

 

 

When I was seven or eight, my best friend was in a car accident and broke her collarbone. Our teacher asked the class to express what we were thinking. I remember saying, “Well, I’m worried, but I’m relieved she’s going to be okay.”  This statement was surrounded by the other students’ chorus of, “I’m sad.”

Growing up with two school psychologists for parents gave my siblings and I the advantage of building an emotional vocabulary at a very young age. Of course as a child, I didn’t realize the edge this would give me when I was older; all I knew was that I was very aware that it wasn’t the norm.
